Miles Music

Started in 1985 by John Miles and Peter Watts, Miles Music is dedicated to capturing the very best of contemporary British Jazz.

The label has 15 titles using most of Britain’s jazz stars: Alan Barnes, the late Mick Pyne, Don Weller, Dave Cliff, Alan Skidmore, Jason Rebello, Guy Barker, Stan Tracey, Dick Morrissey, the late Tubby Hayes and of course Peter King whose CD ‘Tamburello’ won the coveted 1996 BT Jazz CD of the year award. Miles Music twice won the Music Retailers Association award for Jazz, in 1988 for Alan Barnes ‘Affiliation’ and in 1990 for Guy Barker’s ‘Holly J’.

Miles Music does not attempt to inhibit stylistic development, as is shown in the three Peter King albums, and has successfully avoided the pitfalls and lunatic excesses of the avant garde. It is a reflection of creator John Miles’ own musical preferences and gives prominence to the most talented and often neglected British jazzmen playing today.

Forever Elvin

Latest release

‘Forever Elvin’ is the latest release from Miles Music and features Peter King and Alan Skidmore, along with Steve Melling, Alec Dankworth and Martin Drew, playing music that Elvin Jones either wrote or contributed to with his own singular and considerable talent.

As Simon Spillett writes in the sleeve notes for this release, Three-fifths of the band heard here – which itself amounts to a British jazz super group – not only worked with Elvin, but knew his work inside out. A short tour included a date at the popular Jazz at The Fleece venue in rural Suffolk, and it’s from that storming performance that this CD is drawn.

‘Forever Elvin’ does indeed contain the kind of energy and spirit that would turn a visit to a local jazz venue into the kind of gig that becomes unforgettable, and with the release of this CD the intensity and enjoyment of a very special evening is rightly available once more.
