To apply the influences of Bartok's rhythms, folk melodies and harmonies to jazz composition is a master stroke, a unique concept and one which entirely works. Even before any detailed analysis, on the first listening, the construction of the pieces, the motif development and the gradual integration of the two groups works in a way which immediately feels "right" and fulfilling.
Throughout, the string writing is masterful and reaches a superb climax in the third movement. The initial statement of melodic and rhythmic motifs in the first piece is spine-chillingly echoed in the climatic and triumphant ending of the final movement. The Lyric quartet plays superbly both in their solo sections and during the passages when they are scored with the jazz group. Peter's rhythmic writing means that the strings add texture and line without interfering with the improvisations of the rhythm section and soloists.
From the first entry of the alto, Peter demonstrates his gorgeous tone as he takes us through some staggering invention in movement two, a beautiful cadenza growing out of a Latin theme in the middle section and a delightfully joyful and optimistic waltz in the fourth part. Nothing however could prepare the listener for the absolute outpouring of brilliance in the final movement. All the Peter King trademarks are here and demonstrated at their best. The technical mastery, the flow of ideas, the twists and turns of the improvisation, as the end of one phrase unexpectedly becomes the beginning of another, the passion and the searing sound are all overwhelming. To create music at this sustained level over five movements takes real stamina and an inspired imagination.
